Format of the exam
Cambridge English: Advanced has four papers:

Cambridge English: Advanced (by University of Cambridge English Examinations) is a thorough and demanding test of all areas of language ability.

It consists of four papers. Each section (Reading & use of English counts as two sections) contributes 20% of the total marks available:Cambridge English: Advanced covers all four language skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, plus a Use of English component which tests knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Reading & Use of English: 1 hour 30 minutes

Requires you to be able to write a variety of different items such as essays, proposals, reports and reviews.

Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes

Requires you to be able to write a variety of different items such as essays, proposals, reports and reviews.

Listening: 40 minutes

Requires you to be able to follow and understand a range of spoken materials such as lectures, speeches and interviews.

Speaking: 15 minutes

Tests your ability to communicate effectively in face-to-face situations. The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with two examiners and you will take your test with one or two other candidates, making the test more realistic and reliable.

Your results

Cambridge English: Advanced gives detailed, meaningful results. All candidates receive a Statement of Results.

Candidates whose performance ranges between CEFR Levels C2 and B2 will also receive a certificate.

Your certificate

  • Cambridge English: Advanced – Level C2: Exceptional candidates sometimes show ability beyond C1 level. If you achieve grade A in your exam, you will receive the Certificate in Advanced English stating that you demonstrated ability at Level C2.
  • Cambridge English: Advanced – Level C1: If you achieve grade B or C in your exam, you will be awarded the Certificate in Advanced English at Level C1.
  • Level B2 Certificate: If your performance is below Level C1, but falls within Level B2, we will recognise your achievement with a Cambridge English certificate stating that you demonstrated ability at B2 level.
